Somebody Somewhere

A few mornings ago, we woke up to the story on the radio of Czech president Vaclav Klaus having stolen a pen from a signing ceremony and all the outrage around that.

This morning, we woke up to the story of a town councilman in Germany having stolen 200 rolls of toilet paper from municipal restrooms and the outrage around that.

It seems like a safe bet that at any given moment somebody somewhere is stealing something, somebody is outraged, somebody is reporting it as news, and somebody else is listening to the news story and joining the outrage.

People are so predictable.

Updated: In the original version of this post, I named former Czech president Vaclav Havel as the person in the first story. (I misspelled his last name as “Howell”.) The person mentioned in the story was actually Vaclav Klaus, the current Czech president. Another way people are predictable is in thinking they know all about a story when their information is incomplete. I mistakenly thought I knew who the first story was about once I heard the name Vaclav. I was wrong.
